Pomegranate Greek: Tō Rōthē
Symbol of luck, fortune, fertility
In antiquity, the pomegranate was a symbol of good luck, fortune, prosperity and fertility. In Greek mythology, the pomegranate was connected with the wife of Zeus, the goddess Hera, protector of marriage and childbirth. It is also found in the myth of the abduction of Persephone by the god Hades, who kidnapped her and seduced her into eating six pomegranate seeds. As the Fates ruled that anyone who consumed anything in the Underworld had to remain there, Persephone had to live six months in the underworld with Hades and six months on earth with her mother. Persephone’s presence or absence on Earth was associated with the alternation of the seasons, where her absence meant autumn and winter, while her presence on earth signified spring and summer. The ancients also used to hang a pomegranate on their homes for prosperity, happiness and good luck, while women used to eat pomegranate seeds to enhance their fertility.
Meander, Ancient Greek Dramatist, 4th Century BC, said
Everything changes in life with a bit of luck.
May the rare natural qualities of the pomegranate inspire you to fill your life and home with love and good fortune.
