Hercules, the son of Zeus, the King of gods, and, Alcmane, a mortal, was a demigod in Ancient Greece.  He was most notably known for his superhuman strength and bravery.  Somewhere between history and mythology, the Knot of Hercules was created, a powerful symbol of unity.  The Ancient Greeks believed it had potent healing qualities.  Throughout the millennia it has come to symbolize everlasting love, commitment and marriage.
